FAQs
How old do you start training?
My philosophy is the earlier you start the easier training will be and fewer bad habits will arise. I begin with puppies as young as 8 weeks old. From my experience, the breeder will send home pups between 8-10 weeks of age.
Why does the puppy potty in the house?
This is one of the most common questions asked. With our busy lives and after school activities, time can pass by quickly, forgetting to take the puppy out. Another tendency we think puppies need is a water bowl left out. No! Schedule their water intake time. My advice is after each potty break and playtime OUTSIDE.
Is it too late to start training?
It is never too late to start training. I have trained on and off leash with dogs 3-4 years old. The saying is true, you can still train an old dog new tricks. Yes, there will be bigger obstacles to overcome from breaking bad habits, but that just requires patience and determination.
How do I stop the barking?
Barking is a form of communication, and clearly when the puppy barks he wants something. It’s natural, but not excessively. Sometimes barking is a form of negative behavior, such as whining with kids when they don’t get their way. Same goes for puppies. So the best advice any trainer should give is to ignore the bad and reward the good behaviors.
Do you train on leash?
Yes! I encourage on leash training. Even if your puppy is too young for full on leash obedience training with discipline. You can still introduce the leash. I like to introduce during potty breaks. They are short breaks outside. Also, let the puppy wear the leash while playing a game in or outside. Just a few minutes a day can help your pup associate the leash as something positive.
What commands do you teach the puppies?
I teach every day basic commands needed to function in a home. Recall and Potty commands should be your first priority. Then comes kennel, sit, down, and place. If the dog is old enough for leash obedience then they will learn all commands on leash as well as Heel.
